Sex Advice

Dear Dr. Locker: Is it safe to use household items as sex toys? For example, creating a DIY sex toy by using a candle as a dildo?

Answer from Dr. Locker

You can certainly create homemade sex toys, and it's usually safe. To increase the safety, always put a condom on the item before insertion. Also, never use anything that is sharp or breakable. A plastic bottle with a condom on it is fine, but a glass bottle -- obviously -- is a no-no. Also, remember that the stiffer an object is, the more likely it is to cause pain instead of pleasure. The vagina is not a straight canal, so sex toys used for insertion may feel better if they’re pliable. Therefore, when it comes to candles, you might prefer something like a soft beeswax candle. Also, don't light the candle! (You probably already figured that out, but I just had to mention it.)
